Flex and ColdFusion Connectivity

Complex applications often need to connect to some back-end system or service. There are lots of ways to have Flex get data from a datasource, including RESTful APIs, SOAP Web Services, Remote Objects (also known as ActionScript Message Format or AMF), and data management through LiveCycle Data Services.

Today we will talk about connecting your Flex application to Adobe’s ColdFusion Application Server. In particular, we will explain the configuration files and technologies that get ColdFusion communicating with your Flex application. In this article, we’ll make a data-aware application to view data in a SQL database. This idea may not seem so lofty — I’m sure you can find at least a dozen other examples on the web of how to do this — but we will concentrate here on the magic that happens in the background, and on how things really work.
