Instead of writing another introductory article on the Text Layout Framework, I thought it would be more interesting, and more helpful, to write about things that you may not know about the framework, but that you should.
Adobe released the Text Layout Framework library in December 2008, and while it is still in beta, many people already use it. It is included in Flex 4. Here are answers to some of the questions you might have after becoming familiar with this framework.
The Flash Text Engine (FTE) in Adobe Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR 1.5 provides support for many new text capabilities. As a result, I think Flash now treats text as a first class citizen.
An API provides low-level access to this engine, but to use the API you have to write a lot of code. Thus, the FTE is intended to provide the foundation for libraries that use these capabilities and make life easier for the developer.
